On Sunday 26^th May at the 10h.00 service, Tokai Methodist Church handed over 200 hand knitted blankets to members of Westlake United Church Trust.

The blankets were made by a group of ladies for the Emmanuel Educare children.

Thank you very much to TMC for your wonderful initiative, truly a case of “love made visible.”

Residents are up in arms because they say the City of Cape Town has installed water management devices without proper consultation, the contractor made no effort to employ local labour  and the signatures were taken from people…

 Rotary Family Health Days were held at 180 sites across the country at the same time. Our site provided free TB testing, diabetes and Blood Pressure screening, BMI, HIV counseling and testing, polio and measles vaccinations and deworming, Vit A drops for children, male medical circumcision information, cancer awareness, eye testing, and general hygiene and health education.

 Over 200 people were seen in the 3 days.

 The eye testing was the most popular station – 88 people had their eyes tested by Alan Wise Optometrist from the Westlake Lifestyle Centre. 75 people needed glasses and 5 needed medical attention. It made everyone realize what a huge need it is. A big thank you to Alan Wise, who gave up 2 days to come and do the testing for the underprivileged residents of Westlake community who do not often have the opportunity to have their eyes tested.

I read your newspaper dated 2nd May 2013 and would like to clarify some of the points quoted.

• You refer to the Westlake Community Church Trust, when I believe you mean the Westlake United Church Trust (WUCT).
• The Trust’s chairman is Rev. David Gray and the Management Committee’s chairman is Mr. James McGregor.
• Mr. Patrick Heynes, who you wrote was chair of the Westlake Community Church Trust, is in fact the chair of the Westlake Community Foundation.(WCF)
• The WCF is the leadership body representing the Westlake community.
• WUCT works closely with, but is separate from the WCF.
• Both organizations serve to address community development needs.
• WUCT focuses primarily on education, health and community advice, as well as offering skills development.
• WUCT owns the Westlake Community Centre and hires out space, as available, to different organizations.
• WUCT provides to WCF, free of charge, an office, an internet connected pc and a telephone
• The operating costs involved (electricity, water, insurance, repairs and maintenance) in managing the community center are not inconsequential and it is necessary to charge a rental fee to maintain the long-term sustainability of the operation.
• The R20.00 per hour referred to in your article is in line with the lowest rentals levied by any City of Cape Town owned community centers.

I should appreciate it if you would print a correction in your next issue to ensure that today’s article is factually accurate.

WUCT

The Reddam students fitted the socks and shoes on our young learners feet and the children were delighted with their new footware.  Afterwards our visitors enjoyed tea and coffee in the new staff room.

Emmanuel is very fortunate to enjoy the support of the nearby Reddam Schools and we highly value our relationship with them.

Thank you Reddam for being such wonderful friends!

Living Hope did HIV testing in 3 tents. There was an overwhelming response – in total, 82 clients were screened (31 females and 51 males) in 3 hours! In fact it was such a success that we hope to be going there again later in the year.

Nancy assisted with BMI screening, and Joseph distributed TB information leaflets, condoms and masks, together with other members of MSAT South.

MSAT (Multi-Sectoral Action Team) is a City of Cape Town initiative to get NPO’s working together in the Southern Sub-District to network and run awareness events to fight the spread of HIV/Aids and TB.
