Westlake Village has 12 000-15 000 residents, with less than a third owning their home. There are a high number of children, and especially orphans, inherent in poverty stricken areas. This being said, the number of school-going children not attending school is comparatively low. Unemployment is rife ranging from 30 to 50%, with the associated problems of substance-abuse and bad nutrition endemic.
The need for social worker intervention is overwhelming. Many of the residents are the most vulnerable in our society, with no official documentation enabling them to get help from official institutions.
