Computer Fun Day
The WUCT computer centre/internet cafe was buzzing on Sat 29 Oct, when volunteers from the American International School came to show the children of Westlake how to have fun with computers. As you can see, they had a wonderful time as they learnt how to play games – the boys enjoyed racing cars and the girls playing Barbie dolls – amongst other things you can do with computers! We would like to thank the American International School for coming on Saturday to give our children this amazing opportunity to learn some computer skills.
Indoor Sports day for the elderly
On Friday 28 Oct ’11, Beatrice Matthews, the facilitator of our chronic diseases of lifestyle support groups, organised an indoor sports event for the Westlake and Compassion in Action support groups in our hall. There was much fun and excitement, and war cries, as the people competed in the various events. The children from our Emmanuel Educare preschool came to watch and the noise level was deafening. I don’t know who enjoyed it more – the children or the elderly! A huge thank you to Beatrice for organising a highly successful event, and Coca Cola for supplying Cokes as refreshments for everyone to enjoy afterwards.
New foster home opened in Westlake
On Sat 29 Oct ’11, a new foster home in Westlake was officially opened and blessed. “Home from Home”, an organisation which has 21 other homes in and around Cape Town bought a house in Westlake, and a foster mother, Tilly Fish, will look after 6 children. The house is beautifully furnished and 4 children have already moved in. This project will be run as a partnership between Home from Home and Westlake United Church Trust, and we look forward to helping Tilly with her new special little family and pray that this home will truly be a blessing for Westlake.

Cadiz Steenberg Golf Classic: Pre-event photoshoot
WUCT is delighted that Cadiz Asset Management has chosen to support WUCT once again as a benficiary of their annual Charity Golf Classic. In preparation for the event, two of the Emmanuel Educare learners (Sky-Li Harmse and Nwabisa Gcwabe) took part in a pre-event publicity photo-shoot at the golf estate.
The event, sponsored by Cadiz Asset Management, runs from October 30 to November 5, and is hosted at the premier Steenberg Golf Estate, Cape Town. The golf course, rated by respected periodical Compleat Golfer as among the top three golfing experiences in South Africa, boasts a host of illustrious members, including rugby heroes Francois Pienaar, Morne du Plessis and HO de Villiers.
The Cadiz Steenberg Classic has grown since 2000 from a one day tournament into a week-long, community upliftment event with a host of competitions that cater for a wide range of categories, culminating in the main championship on the final day. This is followed by a gala event and prize giving.
The CEO of Cadiz Asset Management, Frank Cadiz, said the funds raised will be donated to beneficiaries in the broader Steenberg community, viz: SARDA which provides disabled children with therapy through horse riding, TEARS, an animal rescue society, the Westlake Community Centre, the Steenberg Clinic and Caddy Programme and the Haemophilia Foundation.
“The Cadiz Steenberg Classic is an important social responsibility event which gives back to the community, impacting positively on the lives of people within the area in which we live and where we play golf,” said Cadiz. “If all of us do more by giving back, we’ll all be in a much better place.”
Steenberg’s Director of Golf, Ian Kennedy, said the event was unique: “All participants will be treated to one of the best golfing experiences available while at the same time they will all be giving something back to the community. And operationally, this event is run at the highest golfing standards possible.”
