Westlake necklaces popular in Switzerland

We received some fan mail from Switzerland regarding the necklaces that are made here at Westlake. To quote from the letter: “Here are two pics of three of our Webster University Geneva students wearing your beads. They are about to become all the rage here.

Please show the ladies how their wonderful work has been received in Switzerland.

The coloured beads are really sought after and I would like to look with you for a way to order another 40 of these. They are all gone and I still have lots of the browns, blues and greens. Unfortunately I do not have anyone coming over at the moment from Cape Town.

Do you have a way of mailing them to me at Webster Geneva if the cost is not too great? See address below. We don’t need anything other than snail mail so as to save costs. Alternatively if someone is coming to Switzerland we could try and make this work.

….I would like perhaps to sell the next batch at our first Webster Geneva Counseling Conference on 19th, 20th and 21st October if possible”.

Jump Math team need volunteers!

Dorothy Raine and her JUMPMATH team have moved over to the new Westlake Primary School and tutor children from Grades 4 and 5 on Wednesday afternoons between 3 and 4 pm.

More volunteers would be much appreciated! Don’t think you have to be a Maths wizard or even a teacher to get involved. Dorothy will guide and give all the instructions you need to help with this really important outreach to the children.

Contact Dorothy at her email address.

On Sunday 4th September members of the ABET (Adult Basic Education & Training) group were treated to a tea party organized by Maryland Literacy Centre at the St John Bosco RC Church hall in Lansdowne.

It was a splendid affair with delicious sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee, and prizes for each table.

A good time was had by all.

Many thanks to the Maryland Literacy Centre!

Elephant Ear Badges for IFAW

A recent amazing community project, which gave work to up to 20 women in Westlake, involved the creation of 23 000 elephant ear badges. This is to create awareness about the illegal ivory trade with the goal to eliminate it. Read more about it on the IFAW website.

Learn to Earn, an NGO in Khayelitsha, asked us to help them (along with 11 other organisations in Cape Town) with this project as they were requested to produce 100 000 badges for IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare).

The badges were sent all over the world.
