Sewing and Beadwork Projects flourish!
Here are some photos of our sewers and beaders – our sewers are working on an order for Township Patterns in Khayelitsha. They are producing a large number of hessian bags, which are being sold in the shops, as well as overseas. We are thrilled to be sharing this order with Township Patterns. Our beaders have also been busy making beaded heart necklaces for Valentine’s Day, as well as ‘button’ necklaces, which are becoming very popular.
School Buses now take Westlake children to school!
WUCT is now involved in helping the community to transport their children to school, as there is no school in Westlake. As a result, we have organised 3 Golden Arrow buses to take 253 children to 13 different schools in the surrounding areas. Here is one of the buses and some of the children waiting to go to school at 7.00 in the morning.
Latest news – We have a new bus shelter, which will be great for the children when the winter rains start!
Sponsor a Child!
Would you like to sponsor an underprivileged child to attend Emmanuel Educare pre-school in Westlake? School fees are currently R2750 per child for the year (2012). Westlake is a diverse community with children from as far afield as Malawi and the Congo. All children receive breakfast and lunch each schoolday as well as a snack. Reports received from primary schools to which the children have progressed have been very positive.
A pre-school education is great preparation for school. Sponsorships are always sought as many parents struggle to pay the fees. Consider sponsoring a child - it is an investment with a return that is immeasurable.
Tel: +27 21 702 1697 – Emmanuel Educare Principal, Mrs Lawrence, or contact us for more details.
Note: You can also contribute to Emmanuel Educare via the Woolworths MySchool programme. To apply for a MySchool card, click here.
Home burnt down in Westlake
During the massive blackout on Friday night (1 February 08), which affected the whole of Cape Town, a candle blew over and a house caught fire in Westlake. Everything was destroyed but luckily the people inside were unhurt – there was an uncle, aunt, young teenage mother who is still at school with her 3 month old baby, and 3 small children (12yrs, 9yrs and a child of 5yrs who attends our Emmanuel Educare Pre-school). We assisted them with clothes, nappies, food parcels, etc. Here are some photos.
All Excited
We are very excited about our new interactive website; not only will we be able to post news and events “as they happen,” but interested parties have the opportunity to comment on whatever they find interesting.
